Ever wondered how to compost even the simplest of everyday food waste without attracting flies and having to endure the smell of rotting food in your kitchen?

Most local authorities now promote some sort of home composting scheme and will provide a dedicated bin of some sort which gets taken away once a week. So, with this service available, why give home composting a try?

Home composting is simple to do and is beneficial because it helps to divert garden waste and some uncooked fruit and vegetable waste, such as peelings, from disposal, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and if you’re a keen gardener, it can provide you with a self-made supply of compost/soil improver.

  1. Buy a kitchen compost bin with a securely fitting lid so that it can be kept near the sink or underneath it. It should be aesthetically pleasing to you and washable.
  2. Ensure that you have a bigger bin with a securely fitting lid which can live outside and house the waste from the kitchen compost bin. Keep this bin away from your pets. A good idea to stop flies being attracted to it is to line the lid with wet paper towels or dry newspaper. As the newspaper becomes damp, re-line the lid with fresh newspaper. Some local authorities will supply you with a small and large bin.
  3. Line the kitchen compost bin with bio-bags if you find keeping the bin clean more manageable that way.
  4. Empty the kitchen compost bin into the outside container daily or every few days, depending upon how much waste you generate. This way you insure that you keep smells at bay.
  5. When home composting, it is really important to make sure that you stick to only composting certain waste. If you don’t, you will attract flies and worse still, rodents and the smell will be unbearable. So, only home compost the following:
  • All your vegetable and fruit wastes (including rinds, pulp & cores).
  • Old bread, donuts, cookies, crackers, pizza crust, noodles.
  • All types of grains such as porridge, barley, oats and rice.
  • Out of date dry foods from the larder.
  • Eggs shells (but ensure they are well crushed).
  • Corn cobs and husks.
  • Do not ever throw any meat, fish or dairy products into your kitchen compost bin!
