A Barbecue Party is as Easy as 1, 2, 3

Everyone loves a barbecue party. Here’s a guide to making it fun, delicious and even easy to organise and clean up afterwards!

  1. THE MENU. Think of easy to grill and prepared foods; ready-made beef burgers, hotdogs, and brown bread buns for both. Buy a couple of bags of pre-washed mixed greens as well; plus tomatoes, red onion, cucumbers, radishes, hummus, carrots and dressing. For dessert, find the juiciest fresh strawberries and buy a container of vanilla ice cream. In terms of drinks – instead of a full bar, serve wine, soft drinks, and one special cocktail. This will prevent a messy bar and cut down on the amount of dirty glasses.
  2. ENTERTAINING. Keep the party outside. It’s easier to clean grass than carpet! Don’t overdo the party decorations. Use machine washable tablecloths, your kitchen cutlery and don’t be afraid to use plates and cups that can be thrown into the recycling bin. It is easy to find pretty, good quality disposable crockery these days. You can also use candles or patio lanterns for lighting. Set up a food table. Begin with the starter (hummus and vegetables). As the burgers and hotdogs are grilling, slice some tomatoes and onions for your salad as well as the burgers. Remember to put out condiments such as mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise as well. Place napkins and plates on the table so people can serve themselves.
  3. CLEAN-UP. Stay on top of the cleaning as the event progresses. For spills, keep a solution of white vinegar, soap, and water in a spray bottle nearby. Afterwards, collect dishes in a plastic laundry hamper, bring them inside and stack them in the dishwasher. Throw linens into the washing machine, separate out the recyclables from the rubbish and remember to cover and place leftovers in the fridge.
